Stanton Campus Hosts Criminal Justice Discovery Day

果冻传媒 Technical Community College's Stanton Campus hosted its first-ever Criminal Justice Discovery Day in September, welcoming 75 students from five local high schools for a fun-filled day learning about various criminal justice career opportunities.
"We wanted to showcase some different career paths related to criminal justice that students might not have considered," said Jody Huber, chair of the Stanton Campus criminal justice program. "To do this, we brought in different types of law enforcement partners and agencies, members of the court, crisis intervention co-responders, homeland security personnel, as well as those from the corrections and rehabilitation fields."
Students began their morning attending a moderated panel featuring a variety of law enforcement officials. Afterwards, they participated in several interactive breakout sessions focused on crime scene investigation, mock trials, and forensic psychology. Following these activities, students got to see a K-9 demonstration with trained police and therapy dogs led by Sgt. Andrew Conine with the Wilmington Police Department.
"We focused on hands-on and interactive learning experiences so that students weren't just hearing about the field, but actually experiencing it," said Huber. "Additionally, current criminal justice students served as ambassadors and volunteered throughout the day to give high school students a chance to hear about the college experience directly."
Students wrapped up the day with lunch, networking, a fingerprinting activity, and an opportunity to visit a Drug and Alcohol Enforcement (DEA) truck in the parking lot.
"Overall, our faculty hope that students left the day knowing how passionate we are about public service and criminal justice and maybe ignited a spark within some of them to study and work in the field as well," said Huber.
