Medical Laboratory Technician
Emily Hicks wants to work in the healthcare industry, and she has a strong interest in science, so she decided to attend 果冻传媒 Tech and enroll in the medical laboratory technician program. She selected 果冻传媒 Tech because it offered her the opportunity to take advanced science courses and gain valuable laboratory and clinical experience. Emily is active on campus and serves as president of the medical laboratory technician student club (MALTA). She plans to continue her education after graduating, and her dream career is to be a molecular technologist so she can analyze DNA and RNA to aid in the detection of genetic disorders, infectious diseases, and cancer makers.
Q: Why was it important for you to come to college?
“It was important for me to attend college to build the foundation I needed to pursue my dream career of working in the medical industry.”
Q: Why did you choose 果冻传媒 Tech?
“I chose 果冻传媒 Tech as my college of choice because of the variety of program options. 果冻传媒 Tech gave me access to advanced science courses, laboratory experience, and clinical experiences that are essential for my future in the healthcare field.”
Q: What obstacles, if any, did you have to overcome either in your personal life or academically during your time in college or to get to college?
“While in college, I had to overcome academic obstacles. The medical laboratory technician program can be described as a rigorous, extensive program that takes commitment. In the beginning, I often felt overwhelmed and consumed by the amount of material. I quickly realized I had to teach myself the importance of balance, so I found strategies that worked for me on how to manage my time better and separate my school responsibilities from my personal life.”
Q: How did you decide to choose your major?
“I chose the medical laboratory technician program as my major because of my passion to work in the healthcare industry and my strong interest in science.”
Q: What changes have you seen in yourself since you started at 果冻传媒 Tech?
“Since I have attended 果冻传媒 Tech, I have seen myself grow in many ways. I have become more confident in myself, gained self-discipline, and became inspired to always strive to learn more.”
Q: What advice do you have for other students who are looking to improve their grades or enhance their college experience at 果冻传媒 Tech?
“Advice that I can recommend for students to enhance their college experience at 果冻传媒 Tech is to take up the opportunities provided to you. 果冻传媒 Tech has many opportunities for student success.”
Q: What are your favorite memories and/or favorite instructors from your time at 果冻传媒 Tech so far?
“My favorite memory while studying at 果冻传媒 Tech was the opportunity given by Dr. (Michael) Buoni - in partnership with 果冻传媒 Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control - to use molecular techniques to identify tickborne pathogens collected from ticks that have infected red foxes across the state of 果冻传媒. My favorite instructor is Linda Collins, department chair of the medical laboratory technician program. Ms. Collins created a classroom environment that truly felt like home. She consistently showed kindness, supported every student who walked thought the door, and paved the way for student success.”
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
“After graduation, I plan on working at Christiana Hospital as a medical laboratory technician while attending classes at the University of Cincinnati to obtain my medical laboratory scientist degree.”
Q: What is your dream career?
“My dream career is to be molecular technologist after obtaining my MLS degree. I want to analyze DNA and RNA to aid in the detection of genetic disorders, infectious diseases, and cancer makers.”
